Netherlands: The world's first hydrogen-fueled domestic boiler is officially in operation

Hydrogen has great potential in future energy supply. In order to test the application of hydrogen in the field of building heating, on June 25, 2019, a pilot project was launched in Rosenberg near Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the world's first hydrogen-powered domestic boiler was put into operation under real conditions.
The boiler developed by the Italian BDR Thermea Group R&D center led by Andrea Manini was put into operation by its Dutch subsidiary Remeha, which is also responsible for overseeing the project.
The project in the Netherlands was jointly initiated by network operator Stedin, Rotterdam City Government and Housing Association Ressort Wonen. The network operator supplies hydrogen through existing conventional natural gas pipelines. This also shows that the existing gas pipeline network is suitable for the transportation of hydrogen. The hydrogen boiler is installed in the boiler room next to the traditional natural gas boiler to ensure heating and water supply at any time.
With the development of hydrogen boilers, BDR Thermea Group and its subsidiary Remeha are contributing to the decarbonization of heating systems: the pure hydrogen burned by the boiler is generated using climate-neutral wind or solar energy, and does not release carbon dioxide. Bertrand Schmidt, CEO of BDR Thermea Group, said: "Sustainably produced hydrogen is an important, potential, and very interesting energy source in the future. If we want to store sustainable for a longer period of time Energy, the conversion of energy into hydrogen is an inevitable necessary technology, because during periods of greatest demand, such as winter, there is not always enough wind or solar energy available."
After the first pilot in the Netherlands, another field trial will be conducted in the UK. Over the next two years, more than 400 hydrogen boilers will be installed there. In this regard, other network operators and building owners in Europe were invited to participate in further field trials to promote the development of carbon-free heating.
